Cartwheel Penny

I bought this 1797 Cartwheel Penny at an antique store during a family trip to South Africa for 289R (rand) which equals about 32 Canadian dollars.

Cartwheel Penny – 1797

With a face value of just penny you can see why the idea didn’t take off. The weight, together with the fact that the metal content of this coin was worth more than the face value meant it was only minted for the year of 1797.On the front outer circle  there is writing “Britannia” which is a personification of Britain On the front there is  Britannia which means “Great britain”.  Britannia is seated facing left, holding an ivy branch in her right hand, and a trident in the crook of her left arm.

Her shield, with the English Red Ensign design, leans at her side. Just ahead of her feet, a ship can be seen sailing in the distance.Beneath her shield on the right is the mint mark SOHO, indicating that it was struck at the Soho mint in Birmingham. The legend reads “BRITANNIA 1797”.

I think if you get this coin on Ebay it will probable be 20$ to 30$ so I think it is a good price for a 200-year-old coin.
